Why is this necessary?

If the chatbot doesn't have enough information, it can just ask for clarification. But non-technical users usually don't understand the database, so it's important that the chatbot has enough information about your database and company.

Imagine Facebook hires a new data analyst, and asks them to answer this question using their database:

"Who are the 10 most active users?" - In this case it's not clear what is meant by "most active user". Should it just check their logs, or also chat messages? and which logs are relevant?

Imagine the database includes this column:

To add a table or graph to a dashboard from the chat as a non-technical user, simply click the options button on the top right of the table or graph, and click "Add to Dashboard"

Technical user

To add a table to the dashboard from the chat as a technical user, click the "Options" button on the top right of the table that the chatbot returned and click "Add table to dashboard". Finally, name your table and click the "Add to dashboard" button in the bottom right.

Technical users

It's important that the person following this guide has the database access credentials, and enough understanding of SQL to test the chatbot and help it understand the database. Non-technical users should not attempt to use BlazeSQL until step 3 of this setup guide.

Database credentials

You must have the credentials of an SQL database that can accept connections from your device if you are using the desktop version. If you are using the web version of BlazeSQL and your database only allows specific IP addresses, you can whitelist the provided static IP.

Step 1: Connect the database

Create an account and connect your SQL database

Log into https://www.BlazeSQL.com/app, create an account, and connect your SQL database.

Make sure your team will be able to connect

If you download the desktop version and your IP address is whitelisted on your database server, keep in mind that users you invite later will need to have their IP addresses whitelisted on your server. We recommend using the web version and whitelisting the provided static IP or allowing all IPs, so that no setup is required for your team.

Step 2: Test the Chatbot, and improve it if necessary

Send a few test questions in the chat, if you're happy with the results, skip to step 3.

What is it?

When using the "technical mode" the chatbot will show the SQL code in its responses and will communicate more specifically about SQL code, and specific tables and columns. The chatbot may also ask the user how to join certain tables or filter on columns, since it assumes technical users know how to.

Non-technical mode

What is it?

When using the "Non-technical mode" the AI will generate and run the SQL code in the background. The chatbot will usually not mention technical specifics about tables, columns, and SQL code, and will avoid asking the user for help with database specifics as it assumes non-technical users aren't familiar with the database.

When registering for BlazeSQL, users are asked if they are "Non-technical" or "Technical", which will configure the app accordingly.

The setting can be changed by switching the "Non-technical" setting in the "Chatbot settings" section of the settings page.

Refreshing/Updating your database

What does updating do?

In BlazeSQL, Updating your database simply means BlazeSQL will check if any tables or columns have been added or removed from your database. This ensures that the chatbot does not see outdated metadata which could result in incorrect queries.

Any descriptions you provided will not be lost, as long as the names of the schemas, tables and columns that the descriptions are for have not changed.

How to refresh/update your database

To update your database in BlazeSQL, simply click the Options button above your database in the chat page, then click the "Update" button.

If you were asked to select a subset of tables when you connected your database (this happens when you have more than 20 tables), you can edit this selection by updating your database. When you update your database, you will once again be asked to select the tables you want to keep.
